2011 Youth Programming


Opportunity Inc. of Hampton Roads has various contracted year round youth programs helping in-school and out-of-school youth to succeed in school and learning relevant workplace readiness skills. Youth are eligible to participate in WIA Youth Services if they are: (1) between ages 14 and 21, inclusive; (2) of low-income; and (3) meet one or more of the following criteria:

·         Deficient in basic skill
·         School dropout
·         Homeless, or a runaway
·         Foster child  
·         Pregnant or a parenting
·         An ex-offender
·         Member of a family receiving public assistance
·         Public housing resident
·         Section eight housing recipient
·         Has a physical or learning disability
·         Has no paid work experience
·         Living in a single parent home
·         Is behind one or more grades
·         Has a 504 Plan or Individualized Education Plan (IEP)

Building Trades Academy, Inc.'s Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate TrainingOut of School Youth Program
 
Localities Served: South Hampton Roads
 
The training program is 10 to 12 weeks long and provides occupational skills training in building and facilities maintenance trades to low-income men and women between the ages of 18 and 21 residing in South Hampton Roads. Training takes place in the classroom as well as the worksite where participants receive hands-on experience working on a project that benefits the community. Life skills instruction, pre-employability training, counseling, job placement and follow-up services are also provided.

Community Solutions
– Out of School Youth Program

 
Cities and Counties Served: Chesapeake, Franklin, Norfolk, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth, Southampton, Suffolk, Virginia Beach

Comprehensive year round program preparing youth for the world of work. Highlights include individual career assessments, customized career plans and portfolios, academic support, volunteer and work experience. Activities include videotaped practice interviews, junior achievement instruction, entrepreneurial training, leadership institute series, and peer mentoring.

JSTP/CNA Youth Academy (operated by Tidewater Community College) – Out of School Youth Program

Tidewater Community College’s Job Skills Training Program (JSTP) is one of the most successful workforce development programs in the nation.  The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Youth Academy is a three-month training program that simulates a work environment and a curriculum designed to meet employer needs. Program features include employer on-site training, full time positions with benefits, and opportunities for advancement.

NSU Science and Technology Education Preparation (STEP) Program (operated by Norfolk State University) – In-School Youth Program
Serves: Norfolk Public Schools 

NSU-Science and Technology Education Preparation (STEP) Program is a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) educational program for junior and senior high school students that offers  math and science  enrichment activities throughout the year.

The Pruden Center's Youth Program Services (operated by The Pruden Center for Industry and Technology) – In-School Youth Program
 
Jurisdiction(s) Served: Isle of Wight County Public Schools and Suffolk Public Schools 
 
Junior and senior students of the Pruden Center will develop their academic skills through involvement in paid internships related directly to their specific programs. Students will attend field trips, workshops, and presentations focusing on career exploration and immersion. Students will also participate in Summer Enrichment including a Junior Achievement program, and paid internships.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Program (operated by Virginia Beach City Public Schools) – In-School Youth Program
 
Serves: Virginia Beach City Public School System
 
Students will participate in STEM after-school programs that will engage and enhance their knowledge of the STEM-field. There is an after-school Robotics Club in which high school juniors and seniors will construct a Level 1 robot via online training modules with a mentor. Students will compete in the annual STEM Robotics Club Competition at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Students may also participate in a STEM 101 Course--beginning in January 2012--taught by Norfolk State University professors via distance learning and receive a 3-hr transferable college credit. Lastly, students will participate in a STEM Seminar with Junior Achievement to connect students with local and global STEM leaders to give them the opportunity to converse, ask questions, and job shadow.

Isle of Wight County In-School Youth Program (operated by Isle of Wight County Public Schools) – In-School Youth Program

 Serves: Isle of Wight County Schools
   
The program will serve approximately 137 students at Smithfield and Windsor High Schools. The program focuses on providing dual enrollment courses for students allowing them to earn up to 8 college credits while attending high school. The students are provided summer internship opportunities, college tours and college preparation workshops. The students will also attend a school district wide career fair with businesses and colleges.

Project Gear UP! (operated by the Urban League of Hampton Roads, Inc.) – In-School Youth Program


Serves: I.C. Norcom High School
 
This program is a work place readiness and College preparatory program designed to prepare youth for life, college, and work. This is an afterschool program at I.C. Norcom High School. Students will learn business development and entrepreneurial skills in Junior Achievement programs. Participants will also have the opportunity to participate in the summer work experience program.

Norfolk State University & Virginia Beach Higher Education Center
(operated by Norfolk State University) – In School Youth Program

 
City Served: Virginia Beach

Located at the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center (VBHEC)The Spartan Prep Academy provides training and workshops in time management, gang awareness, job application/interview skills, college application, and career options, work experience, and financial management. Students obtain career portfolios, SAT Prep assistance and peer mentoring. Students also participate in community service and field trips in the areas of cultural awareness, college visits, and career fairs. This program serves all Virginia Beach High Schools.

Pathways to Success Program (operated by Southampton County Public Schools) – In-School Youth Program
 
County Served: Southampton

The Pathways to Success Program focuses on drop-out prevention, alternative secondary school services, summer employment, adult mentoring, drug and alcohol abuse prevention and subsidized work experiences. Students obtain SOL tutoring, and work readiness training. Youth also participate in career exploration field trips to local employers, and several college and university visits.
